Blooming Orchid

Our oldest orchid (almost 20 years old now) has started its summer bloom: it is very fragrant (vanilla [Correction: Babette informs me it smells more like tobacco, chocolate and cinnamon.]), especially in the morning. We are expecting 7 more blooms. This is Babette's first and probably favorite orchid (Carl & Wanda sent it from Hawaii).

It is beautiful. I see you put them outside in summer, too. I didn't know if I'm doing the right thing. My lavender is dying, though - too much shade for it. BTW, I so enjoyed your French trip photos. especially the one with walled garden. Thank you. Posted by: Tatyana at juillet 23, 2004 03:49 PM
Thank you. Lavender requires sun and not too much watering, at least in our experience. Posted by: miladus at juillet 24, 2004 09:02 AM
Watering is not a problem. Gigantic 3-trunked silver maple my neighbours have, overlapping four backyards and covering my entire back garden with shade, is. So now I'm limited to - mostly- hostas and hydrangeas (hortensias). Only in the spring my garden celebrates sun with tulips and muscari hyacinths... Posted by: Tatyana at juillet 26, 2004 02:33 PM
